Facts: This is a monarch caterpillar. The larval stage of the caterpillar is the active, immature form of it which will undergo the metamorphasis into a butterfly. Caterpillars increase over 1,000 times their body mass during the larval stage because they eat almost constantly. Most are herbivores, and eat leaves, though some species eat plant parts, fungi and dead animal matter, including other caterpillars. Caterpillars come in many colors and patterns. Many caterpillars are camouflaged to blend into their surroundings (the host plant). This hides them from predators. Generally, the brightly colored larva are poisonous; their color is a reminder to predators about their toxicity. Most caterpillars live from about two weeks to a month. For many caterpillars, this is the longest part of the life cycle.
I was fortunate enough to spot him in my parsley garden in Northampton County, PA, USA.
